Fact Check: Truth about Rahul Gandhi's comment of Potato to Gold machine

  • Share

Summary

Rahul Gandhi never claimed that he will install a machine which will convert potatoes into gold. He claimed that the promise of installing such a machine was made by PM Modi which is certainly false since there is no record of PM Modi having ever made any such promise.

Since last year, a short video clip of Rahul Gandhi is going viral on social media with a claim that Rahul Gandhi has promised to invent the machine which will convert potatoes into gold.

In the 20 seconds video, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying that he will install a machine that will give gold in return if we feed potato. You can watch the viral video here:

The video was tweeted by Amit Malviya last year on Nov 15th.

Another Twitter user @TheAngryLord had mocked Rahul Gandhi a day before Amit Malviya's tweet.

Clipped Video: Rahul Gandhi was actually talking about tall promises of PM Modi

The viral video is clipped one from a 26-minute long speech during an address in Gujarat’s Patan on November 12, 2017. In the full version, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying:

"Modiji told Adivasis that he will give 40,000 crores to them but didn't give a single penny. A few months ago, there was a flood here and he said that he will give Rs 500 crore but again didn't give a single penny. He told potato farmers, will install a machine that will give gold in return if we feed potato. Insert potato from one end, gold will come out from the other end. Will make so much money that you will not understand what to do with this money. These are not my words but Narendra Modiji’s words".

You can watch the relevant portion from 17:34 minutes onwards.

Did PM Modi ever promise to install machine which will convert Potatoes into gold?

No, we couldn't find any media report or videos which can substantiate Rahul Gandhi's claim. PM Modi has never made any statements like this.

Conclusion: Rahul Gandhi never claimed that he will install a machine which will convert potatoes into gold. He claimed that the promise of installing such a machine was made by PM Modi which is certainly false since there is no record of PM Modi having ever made any such promise.

Update: The post was updated on 7th September 2019 to remove the embedded tweets. Instead, we added a tweet screenshots and vimeo's video.
